| “I couldn’t help but notice Canberra’s speed cameras feature warning signs and flashing lights. If Victoria’s speed cameras aren’t for revenue raising, why don’t we have the same signs and lights?” – Dean Parker, Glen Waverly. (Herald Sun, 15/10/2007) Dear Mr Parker, I couldn’t help but notice that you are an idiot. Why should you have to be told that if you are doing the wrong thing in a certain area you may be caught doing it? YOU SHOULDN’T BE DOING IT. If we had big signs and flashing lights saying “HEY GUYS! THERE IS A SPEED CAMERA UP AHEAD” then, of course, you will slow down until after the speed camera and then continue to speed until the next big set of flashing lights. The fact that there are speed limits implies that there may well be speed cameras operating. Telling people where they are is stupid and completely defeats the purpose of having them. Of course speed cameras are raising revenue, because people are idiots and speed everywhere and then have a cry when they get caught because no one told them that they were going to get caught. The fact that there are speed cameras is supposed to act as a deterrent. As I said, if there were signs saying “look out, you’re going to get fined!” then you’d slow down for that and then speed up again. Not having signs is supposed to deter people from speeding using the mindset “Hey, there just might be a speed camera here somewhere, I think I might obey the law and stick to the speed limit” It is unfortunate that people such as you exist, let alone write to newspapers. I am concerned by your complete lack of logic and reasoning in your complaint. This is on par with saying “There should be a safe house where I can murder people”, and I’m sure even you can see how ridiculous that is. Yours sincerely, Toam. |
