| Title: | Promote that man! | |

| Something I have noticed more and more lately, which in no way implies that I think this is a relatively new thing, is the horrifically unprofessional attitudes and work ethics displayed by the staff in supermarkets. Now, I know that it is a supermarket and, as such, I don’t expect it to be the most formal place to visit but I do expect the staff to realise that they are at work and that, even though they be working with their mates, they are not out with their mates. I have noticed that this tends to get worse towards the end of the day e.g.: after 8pm. For example I was recently in a supermarket at probably 9pm and I saw an employee yelling down an aisle to another employee, who was stocking shelves at the other end, “Yeah I’m taking my break now, uleh” and then proceeded to punch a cardboard box. I am unsure about the standard operating procedure of a supermarket, having never worked in one; however I am fairly sure that this is not an encouraged activity. Even more recently I was in a supermarket at near enough to the same time and as I entered the store I had difficulty manoeuvring around the front of the store because they staff who were stocking the shelves had decided that the front of the store was a nice place for them to leave trolleys and boxes of whatever it was they were putting onto the shelves. I may not have minded if they had done it in a neat way, or if they were doing it in the manner that they were during hours that the store was not open. However making the store unnecessarily difficult for customers to get around while you are open is a really poor way to operate. Later in this same trip Mort and I were near the deli. A male employee comes out from behind the deli while Mort is being served by a female employee. He asks us if we would like to buy some roast chickens. We decline. Then, as though he was working on fucking commission for these chickens, he continues to push his sales pitch on us informing us that they are reduced. Still, we decline. Then in a last desperate measure he informs us that the deli girl comes with them. After that we were at the checkout. There were two checkouts open and both had fairly large lines. This fellow who we had seen at the deli was now near the checkout. We were queuing for the register adjoining the cigarette counter. Normally the person who is on that checkout will also operate the cigarette counter. However if they are busy it is not uncommon for another staff member to serve customers at the cigarette counter. And when the line is long they will also call the next customer around to the front to be served there instead, to speed up the process. In this particular instance the line was long. This fellow from the deli who we had now determined to be in some sort of senior position at the store decides to bring his friend, from the back of the line, to the front of the cigarette counter to be served – jumping ahead of about 5 people. He then goes back to standing around doing nothing. After I get served and I am waiting for Mort to get out a few people begin queuing at the cigarette counter and after a while one of them, who is another staff member obviously finished for the day, yells out to the guy who is standing around to get someone to serve. Rather than do it himself he then delegate the task to someone else who actually appeared to be working. So basically the entire time Mort and I were in the store, the only thing this fellow managed to do was sexually harass a female employee and give his friends special treatment. Promote that man! |
